As you practice, you'll also get to learn your opponent's moves and how to deal with them. Don't rely on them exclusively, but you'll find that many 1v1 encounters open with special moves in one way or another. Pick a character or two and learn these down pat. This can provide unblockable attacks, close distance quickly, or turn a successful parry into a near-finisher.

If you look at any given character, you'll see that they have a "move set" full of special moves. This is where the second layer gets involved. Special Moves: Once you've got the basics down, many duels can devolve into successful counters, cautious tactics and little progress. And don't spend so much time spamming guard breaks that you lose the old-fashioned way. Pushing opponents into walls will knock them down, which is also good, if not as good.Ĭounterpoint: don't get pushed. (A parry can create this opening, as well.) Some characters are much better at this than others: the Raider and Lawbringer can both send enemies over long distances, and most characters with shields have effective shield bashes. So spend your time trying to maneuver them into an advantageous spot where one simple push can send them flying. If there's a cliff behind them, they'll go down. If you perform a guard break followed by another press of square, you'll send your opponent backwards. Push: If there's a way to fall off the edge of the cliff, any given encounter is going to revolve around trying to get your opponent off the edge. But breaking through to the next level of play requires fluency with parrying. It's not easy, and different opponents will require different timing depending on the speed of their attacks. So you'll want to practice this against the AI until you're completely fluent with this. It's not easy, and failure will mean you take damage from whatever attack was coming your way. If you do it right, you'll interrupt your opponent's attack, throw them off balance and gain a crucial opening. This is the moment when you want to throw a heavy attack. But right before hitting, that arrow will start to flash. Basically, you wait for the attack to come you see the little arrow turn red, just like always. Parrying is much harder to pull off, but it can mean a huge advantage if you get it right. To parry, you must first be guarding in whatever direction the attack is coming from. Don't just block - blocking is for chumps. Parry: The initial tutorial does not explain parrying, but it's among the most important things you need to know to find success in For Honor. The same principles can be applied to more complex situations. Note: I'm using the term "duel" sort of loosely here, covering the actual duel mode but really just any 1v1 encounter.
